Where do we get there?

On the afternoon of Wednesday (2), the levels of the Rio Negro in Manaus reached 15.89 meters and are already near the lowest level on record, of 13.64 m in 1963.

The drought in the northern Amazon, especially the Rio Negro, tends to extend into early 2010, says meteorologist Sipam System (Amazon Protection), Ricardo Dallarosa. The lack of rain is caused by El Nino - a warming of Pacific Ocean - which hinders the formation of clouds in part of South America

"The bed of the Rio Negro has many rocks. When the waters go down much, the rock surface, blocking the passage of larger vessels. Pleasure boats, which carry groceries, are unable to navigate, "the superintendent of the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) in Amazonas, Marco Antonio Oliveira.

The photographer Rodrigo Whale, Manaus, has overseen the difficulty of the population of Manaquiri, a town near Manaus. He recorded the death of tonnes of fish in rivers. "I felt the smell of rotten the plane," reports.
